Allen Buckley For United States Senate - Other Issues

Other Issues

Abortion

Abortions will occur regardless of legality or illegality. I am against government intervention. I am also against government (i.e. taxpayer) funding of abortions. (At the time of an unwanted pregnancy, a woman who is firmly opposed to abortion very likely will not have an abortion, whereas a woman who is pro choice may or may not have an abortion, regardless of the law.)

Farm Subsidies

Need to be eliminated. A large percentage is paid to corporate farms. Pressure should be placed on other countries that provide farm subsidies, to eliminate those subsidies.  See Press Release: Press Release.pdf

Frivolous Lawsuits

Need to be curtailed. A possible means of curtailing them would be conversion to the United Kingdom’s system, whereby the loser pays the winner’s attorneys fees. This rule could be applied after discovery of the facts, with the judge to decide whether a winner exists. Other possible means of preventing them exist. Class action settlements should be prohibited unless meaningful benefits are supplied to plaintiffs, while considering Plaintiffs’ attorneys fees.

Freedom of Religion

Every person should be free to practice his own religion, without government intervention or involvement. Government should stay out of religion, and religion should stay out of government.

Water Needs

Water needs should be handled primarily by the States.  The dispute involving Lake Lanier and the Chattahoochee River should be handled by the Federal Government through the Federal courts.

Gun Control

In accordance with the Second Amendment, individuals should have the right to bear arms.

College Assistance

Loans should be made available by the federal government on a break-even basis, and such loans should be non-dischargeable in bankruptcy.

Employment Laws

Subject to the terms of employment agreements (if applicable), employers should be able to hire and fire at will, and employees should be allowed to form unions. I think that the reasonable accommodations provision of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) should be retained.

Emissions Standards

Don’t need to be utilized. The price of gasoline will continue to rise.

Infectious Diseases

The CDC should be responsible for investigation and cure or means of protection.

Sub-Prime Loans and Bail-Outs

The federal government should not grant relief. Intervention by the federal government in the Bear Stearns and AIG financial problems should not have happened. The Treasury Department should be able to borrow up to the $700 billion it seeks, provided the taxpayers are not exposed to risk, and instead any losses incurred by the Treasury Department are reimbursed by individuals who borrowed excessively (i.e. whose mortgages were foreclosed), companies that loaned excessively (i.e. to people whose mortgages were foreclosed), and purchasers of the toxic mortgage-backed securities.  Possible means of reimbursement include (a) a 1% tax on revenue or gross income, or (b) a 15% surtax.  (The Treasury Department would sell the toxic mortgage-backed securities over a 3 year period.)  Other possibilities to protect taxpayers exist and all of them should be considered.

Sports

The federal government should not get involved in professional or college sports.

Foreign Aid

Foreign aid should be substantially reduced.

Marriage

Should be decided by religious organizations, not any government.

The Infrastructure

The federal infrastructure (roads and bridges, etc.) needs work.  I believe that restoring it is a function of the federal government.  I believe the fix should take place over a number of years, and the funding source should be roads taxes and the General Fund.
